Masterclasses with Neil Gresham

Neil Gresham is one of Britain’s best known and most experienced climbing coaches. On the first Sunday of December, first Saturday of January and first Sunday of February, he will be delivering four workshops (2 on training and 2 on technique on each day), which have been designed to help you get the very most from your sessions at Stronghold. The sessions last 1 hour and are ideally suited to anyone climbing between V2 and V5 who wishes to climb harder.

SUPPORTIVE GYM TRAINING FOR CLIMBERS

Train your opposition muscles to avoid injury, use the Suspension straps to build ‘crusher’ compression, and strengthen your core for overhanging climbing.

INTRODUCTION TO FINGERBOARD TRAINING

Build strong fingers for harder climbs, the best exercises and the correct grips to use, and other key tips for safe, effective training.

WARMING UP AND FLEXIBILITY TRAINING

Warm-up to climb harder and avoid injury, essential supportive exercises and strategies explained. Flexibility exercises for tackling more gymnastic climbs.

CIRCUIT BOARDS FOR ENDURANCE TRAINING

Boost your power-endurance for harder more sustained climbs - improve your ability to rest and recover on overhangs. Training protocol - setting the grade, number of laps and rest times explained.

Neil will guide you through key technical skills and drills, so that when you’re climbing you’re as efficient as possible.

How to make long jumps and dynos - use controlled momentum to make harder more powerful moves. An introduction to competition-style coordination problems.

SLOPERS, VOLUMES AND COMPRESSION CLIMBING

How to feel comfortable and confident on slopers - Key body position and movement tips. Learn to use your heel and toe-hooks to ‘squeeze’ large features.

The art of planning your sequence before you set out: learn to analyse and correct mistakes in order to climb harder problems with less time and effort.

Neil Gresham is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading voices in performance coaching for climbing. He has been coaching and writing regular training articles for national magazines since 1993 and has pioneered many of the methods that are used widely by coaches today. Neil is the current training columnist for UKC.com and Rock & Ice in the USA. He has also authored a book on training (‘How to Climb – Training’, published by Rock & Ice in 2017) and co-authored a further three training books.

Neil has delivered coaching courses and seminars all over the world and has helped hundreds of climbers of all ages and ability levels to raise their game. When coaching, he draws heavily on his vast bank of climbing experience, having put up hard new routes in over fifteen different countries. He has climbed E10 trad, WI 7 on ice and in 2016 he climbed his first 8c+ at the age of 45 when he made the first ascent of Sabotage 8c+ at Malham Cove.
